Braces fitted

Wednesday 10th December 2014

Well on Wednesday I had my braces fitted, it didn't hurt but it wasn't exactly comfortable!

I chose to have red bands on my braces to look Christmassy! :)

That day my teeth ached a lot and I found it hard to eat much because my teeth were so tender!

Today

My teeth still hurt! I managed to sleep though because its more of a dull ache pain than an excruciating one! My braces are rubbing against my lips so I have used the wax they gave me to cover up the metal brackets that were causing me trouble! And I have put bongela over the sores :)

I have another appointment on February 11th 2015 to have them tightened and they said I should have to wear these for at least a year before I have my surgery!

I will update again when I have anymore news (which could be a while) but have a lovely Christmas everyone :)

Braces

Well its been a while since I updated (because nothing has really happened) but I went to the orthodontist on 26th November and they got me prepared for my braces, they took moulds (which are disgusting!) and took photographs of my teeth. After all that I signed some forms and they put blue bands in-between my back teeth to make gaps for the braces to fit in place.

Its been nearly 2 weeks since then and I am going back to have my braces fitted on 10th December! I will then have the braces for approx. 12 - 18 months and then I will have my jaw surgery!! Very scary!

I will update again when I have my braces fitted!! :)

Update

UPDATE

Well its been a while since i updated, so i thought id better say something!

My tongue is almost back!!! Only got a few tingles now, which is great! its taken nearly 2 months to get to this stage so its been a long road!

I have also started wearing contact lenses so that when i have my new jaw i will be happy with my appearance!

I have my brace appointment booked on the 26th November and another one on the 10th December, the first one is for the moulds (which i hate!) then the next one is having my brace fitted! After that it will be between 6 - 12 months before i will actually have my jaw surgery! Exciting stuff!

Well i will update again when i have my braces fitted! :)

Day 5 post operation
Today is Saturday and i am feeling OK, swelling has gone down alot but i still have the issue of not being able to feel my tongue and the small lump is still there. Not alot else to report today. :)
  Day 6 post operation
Well today i felt slightly dizzy at lunch time but i am putting that to my medication and i was sat in the sun all afternoon. During the evening my swelling went down alot more and i can now open my jaw alot wider. Still cant feel my tongue and the lump is still there but i am going to the doctor tomorrow so hopefully they will be able to tell me whats wrong :)

Day 4 post operation

Well today is Friday and my swelling has gone down again, still cant feel my tongue which is still worrying me! I managed to sleep again last night which was good and i am able to move my jaw alot more now :)
The only problem i had today was that i had a mental breakdown because i was fed up with not being able to eat properly! I had a big cry because i was hungry but i didn't want to eat anything because i couldn't taste it! i don't enjoy eating at the moment and it all just got to me and i broke down :') But i got over it and ended up getting and Indian takeaway which i managed to eat a little of.

In the evening my swelling came down a bit more and i noticed a small hard lump on the outside of my jaw, i looked it up and it could be an infection so i am keeping an eye on it. I am going to the doctors on Monday so hopefully its nothing serious :S

Day 2 post operation
So this is an update on what happened on Wednesday which was day 2 after surgery, as i said in the previous post i woke up at 4:30 in pain yet again! I did manage to get back to sleep after my breakfast but only for a few hours.

During the day i was absolutely fine, the only thing bothering me was the fact i still couldn't feel my tongue! The swelling has gone down a little so i didn't look as fat as i did yesterday! I started bleeding slightly from my bottom right wound but it was only a little every now and again so i wasn't too worried.

I decided to call the hospital to ask about my tongue and they said it was normal but if i still couldn't feel it by Monday then i should go to the doctor. I managed to eat some spaghetti on toast for lunch which was amazing! Then for tea i had chicken kiev's and baked beans which was OK.

I decided to try and spread my medication out a bit more so that it would last through the night, so i took 2 paracetamol literally just before i went to sleep. So hopefully i could get a good nights sleep!

Day 3 post operation
I slept!!! I went to bed at around 11:30pm, it took me a while to get to sleep but in the end i didn't wake up until 8:30am! My first lie in since my surgery! I still couldn't feel my tongue though which is really starting to annoy me!

I managed to walk up town with my grandma and say hello to my work friends. A few people saw me and asked how i was which was nice, i liked being out and about again. We got home and i sat down to chill before lunch and i suddenly didn't feel good! I started feeling really spaced out and sick, so i took a little half hour nap to see if that would help but it didn't! I got up for lunch and my grandma had made me spaghetti on toast like yesterday but i couldn't eat hardly any of it! The back of my throat really hurt and i couldn't focus on anything because i felt really spaced out. The problem was i was really hungry and my stomach hurt because i was taking so many pain killers and not eating enough to counteract them! I had a bit of a cry at the tea table and decided i felt like eating a big tub of Ben and Jerry's ice cream! So my amazing grandma and sister walked up town and got me some!

My spaced out feeling wore off eventually and i am starting to feel OK again, for tea i managed to eat an omelet and a few chips which was good. I can now open my mouth wider than before and my teeth aren't as tender as they were yesterday, so hopefully i will have a good nights sleep tonight and feel even better tomorrow!

Wisdom teeth removal

Monday 11th August 2014
Sorry i haven't updated in a while i haven't felt myself until today! So i will start on the day of my surgery:

6am - Woke up feeling really nervous had a small glass of squash and brushed my teeth, my grandma and friend Lisa came to my house ready to travel to Exeter Hospital.

We arrived just before 7:30am i got checked in and given a bay in a ward, i was there for a while before a nurse came round and checked my blood pressure and went through all my paper work. I had to do a urine sample to make sure i wasn't pregnant and the i got dressed into a very attractive hospital gown and tight socks! (the socks are to stop blood clots).

I had 2 visits from other people who where going to be working on me, the first visit was from the 2 Anaesthetists that where going to be putting me to sleep, i told them that the last time i was put under i came round feeling very sick so can they do something to stop that? She said yes and wrote something in her notes. The second visit was from my surgeon and a trainee doctor they where really nice and made me feel slightly better about what i was having done.

After they had all left i had a bit of a breakdown, started crying as the realisation that i was having surgery kicked in! But i was then left for 2 and a half hours until my surgery time, a theatre nurse and another nurse came in at 11:15am went through more paper work then i was ready to go down to theatre! The theatre nurse was lovely and really made me feel at ease.

I was taken to a room with the anaesthetist and another doctor, i got up on to the bed and i had heart monitors strapped to me then the anaesthetist put the needle into my hand, they all chatted to me and kept me calm throughout. They injected something that apparently would make me feel like i had had a glass of wine! I felt a little funny but it wasn't too bad, then another nurse put an oxygen mask over my face which forced my eyes to close, the theatre nurse squeezed my hand and said that they were going to look after me, and that was it! That was the last thing i remember before waking up.

As i woke up i felt very disoriented and i didn't know what was going on, it was like i was in a dream and i felt very spaced out. I was talking to the nurses who asked me if i was in any pain, i said no because i couldn't feel anything really. I still had the heart monitors on and a blood pressure cup, they kept taking my temperature because apparently my heart was a little to fast and i was only supposed to be in recovery for an hour but i was in there for 2 and a half hours! After my heart rate had dropped they took me back to the ward where i stayed for about half an hour, then i got dressed and had something to drink and tried to eat a biscuit! They kept me in until 4:15pm and after going through all the do's and dont's and being given my medicine i was discharged.

At home i tried eating some baked beans which i managed a little of then i went up to bed early after taking my tablets. This was the worst night ever! I was in so much pain at about 11:30pm my jaw hurt and my tongue was really numb and tingly, my mum gave me an ice pack and some more tablets but i only got about an hours sleep before the pain hit again! I was up until 6:00am in pain, i then took some more pain killers and my dad made me a luke warm cup of tea and i managed to sleep untill about 9am.

Day 1 post operation
Today was ok, i kept on top of my tablets and i wasnt in much pain all day, the only thing that bothered me was that i still couldnt feel my tongue! It was tingly but i couldnt feel it, which made eating very difficult! My swelling was worse on one side as you can see by the photo, eating wise i had porridge for breakfast, tomato soup for lunch and rissotto for tea. I couldnt really chew anything because my tongue was in the way! I stayed up a bit later tonight because i felt slightly more alert, i brushed my teeth with a soft baby brush and used the mouthwash i was given. I went to bed around 11:30pm and i woke up at 4:30am in agony again! I got some frozen peas and held them to my face to try and numb the pain. I was up again till about 6am when i was allowed more pain killers, i then had some toast because i was so hungry!

Now i am up to date, today i am feeling more like myself i will update again tomorrow when i find out how today will turn out!

Tuesday 29 July 2014

The Beginning! :)

This is me before i have had any work done. I am 2 weeks away from my first operation to get ready for my jaw surgery!

I am having 5 teeth removed including all 4 of my wisdom teeth, the other tooth is my front bottom tooth which has been damaged by my previous braces. They are going to close the gap with more braces before my actual jaw surgery.

My bottom jaw is 12mm back from where it should be, so i have a 12mm overbite!! Which is pretty big as you can see my the photo my lips don't meet properly.

After my wisdom teeth have been removed i will be having train tracks which will align my teeth so they line up once my jaw has been repositioned. During my jaw surgery they are going to break my jaw and move it forward, once they have it in the right place they will put metal plates in to hold the jaw in its new position. My surgeon also said that they are going to shave some bone from my chin so that my chin won't protrude as much when my lower jaw is brought forward. This will make my profile look normal otherwise i would have a witch's chin!! They will do this whilst i am having my jaw surgery.

I will update again on the day of my first surgery, yes i am scared! :S
